- Information From The Artist:
This cypress comes from one of two places: Fresh water wood that has been floating int he Atchafalaya Basin, the largest swamp in the United States, which is located in south central Louisiana, or Sunken wood that was retrieved by a diver in 8 to 10 feet of brackish water on the northern shore of Lake Pontchartrain above New Orleans. This wood is characterized by barnacle holes and ship- worms known as teredo worms (small salt water clams that bore tunnels into the wood. In fact these worms caused damage to the boats used by Columbus, and it was the same boats that introduced these worms to the Northern Atlantic).
When a cypress tree ages beyond 100 years, the tree beings to secrete "cypressene", a naturally occurring preservative that darkens the color of the wood and protects the tree from rot, decay and insects. This is why the wood endures so long in the water. In addition, the sunken wood darkens with age due to the absorption of minerals from the swamp and lake beds; it is not uncommon to find sunken wood that has been in the water for over 100 years. Once the water logged wood is dry, I start the cutting process with a band saw and pressure wash the wood and let it dry in the sun for several days. The next phase involves grinders, sanders and brass brush wheels to further clean and carve the piece. My goal is to do as little as possible to the wood, for the true attraction is the beauty of what nature has presented. (Note: should the wood gather mold or mildew over the years, simply take it to the car cash and pressure wash with clear water and it will instantly be restored like the day of purchase).
The artist, Kenny Grieg, a resident of New Iberia, Louisiana, creates "cajun crafts" consisting of wood, copper and mixed media.
Here's Kenny "in is own words": The wood speaks, and it is my task as an artist to present in such a way that it communicates with the public so everyone may join in the conversation. My style, as a craftsman, is not to interfere with the wood and only present what nature has created. Such a simple concept has opened a beautiful and bountiful door of creativity. One of the most gratifying aspects of my work is hearing former customers voice how visitors to their home instantly recognize and express the uniqueness of the wood, and that makes my heart sing. As this wood speaks to you, it will certainly speak to others. I sincerely thank you for your purchase, and may it serve you well.
